If the Differential is the brain of the drivetrain, the Universal Joint (U-Joint) is the flexible “wrist.” Its primary job is to allow the drive shaft to transmit power at an angle, which is necessary because your transmission is fixed to the frame while your rear axle bounces up and down with the suspension.

• The Benefit: This allows the joint to handle thousands of pounds of “twist” (torque) while still being able to pivot freely.
