Engine partsIt sounds like you’re diving into the heart of an internal combustion engine! Whether you’re rebuilding a classic, diagnosing a smoky exhaust, or just curious about how things move under the hood, here is the breakdown of how these two components work together.

Piston Ovality: When cold, a piston is actually slightly oval-shaped. Because there is more metal around the wrist pin area (the “boss”), that section expands more when hot. Making it oval ensures it becomes perfectly round at operating temperature.
-
Tapered Profiles: The top of the piston (the crown) gets much hotter than the bottom (the skirt). Modern pistons are often conical, with a smaller diameter at the top to allow for greater thermal expansion without seizing.
-
Barrel-Shaped Skirts: Some skirts have a slight “curve” to reduce the surface area in contact with the cylinder wall, which minimizes friction and noise (piston slap).
