If the pistons and rings are the “legs” of the engine, the Cylinder Head is the “lungs” and the Gasket is the “seal” that keeps the whole system from losing its breath.

• Combustion Chambers: The small “caves” where the fuel and air mix and explode. Their shape determines how efficiently the engine burns fuel.

• Intake & Exhaust Ports: The hallways that allow fresh air in and spent gases out. Performance heads are often “ported” (smoothed out) to improve airflow.

• Water Jackets & Oil Passages: A complex network of channels that circulate coolant to prevent the head from warping and oil to lubricate the valvetrain.

• Valvetrain: Includes the valves, springs, retainers, and sometimes rockers or lifters. This assembly must open and close thousands of times per minute with microscopic precision.
